Suppose you spend more time searching your Gmail inbox for information than you’d like. In that case, you’ll love the new Gemini AI integration.

In conjunction with the release of two new Pixel smartphones, Google recently announced the addition of Gmail with Gemini integration for Android users with a feature called Gmail Q&A. This new capability, which desktop users have had access to for some time now, uses generative AI to allow you to “chat” with your inbox to find specific emails and information contained in messages and get summaries of your communications, with citations for specific emails.

Gmail Q&A is just the latest in AI-powered tools designed to enhance productivity. Only Android users who pay for Gemini or Google One AI Premium and Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, and Education Premium can access it on their mobile devices. Eventually, the feature will be brought to the iOS app.

More Than Enhanced Search: How Gmail with Gemini Integration Boosts Productivity

Although the new productivity tools will not replace the search bar at the top of your Gmail account, they offer significantly more functionality. Google is shifting away from search as we know it toward more AI-powered tools, and Gmail with Gemini integration is just another step in this evolution.

When you want to find something in your email box, using the conversational AI capabilities of Gemini allows you to ask specific questions and have the chatbot summarize the results for you. For example, you can ask the chatbot for information about the key milestones in a project as discussed over email or request that it catch you up on discussions about planning an event. The search functionality that you’re used to isn’t going away. Still, Gemini makes it easier to find emails and get the information you’re looking for in seconds.

Currently, Gmail with Gemini Integration will only crawl your existing mailboxes. Still, there are plans to expand the function to Google Drive as well. Google is also in the early stages of bringing Gemini functionality to Docs, Calendar, and other services to support productivity across the platform.

Making the Most of Gemini for Gmail

To use Gemini to search your inbox, click the black star logo to open the AI panel. From there, ask your question or input what you’re looking for, and let the AI work its magic.

Early users report that while the generative AI responses are generally accurate and relevant, as with most current AI products, Gmail with Gemini integration has some bugs. Some users report that the results contain irrelevant or nonsensical responses. In some cases, the AI doesn’t accurately interpret the question, returning results that don’t address the user’s needs.

If you don’t have a paid Workspace account through school or work, you can access this new AI-powered tool and others through personal Google One AI Premium for $19.99 monthly.
